Volkswagen Touran Owners Manual: Main beam control

First read and observe the introductory information and safety warnings

Main beam control (Light Assist)

The main beam control switches the main beam on and off again automatically within the limits of the system depending on environmental and traffic conditions as well as travelling speed  . The function is controlled by a sensor located on the inside of the windscreen above the interior mirror.

Automatic main beam control (Dynamic Light Assist)

The automatic main beam control (Dynamic Light Assist) can, working within the limits of the system, minimise or even stop dazzling of other road users  .

The system identifies other road users as well as their distance from own vehicle and covers part of the headlights appropriately to prevent disturbing other road users. If dazzling other road users cannot be prevented, the light distribution is automatically set to dipped beam headlights. The function is controlled by a camera located at the base of the interior mirror.

The automatic main beam control automatically switches the main beam on as of speeds of approx. 60 km/h and off again at speeds under approx. 30 km/h depending on whether there are vehicles ahead, whether there is oncoming traffic and also on other general and traffic conditions.

If the dynamic bend lighting is deactivated   or the headlight switch-over   is activated, the full beam lights are only switched on and off automatically. This is done depending on the vehicles ahead, oncoming traffic and the road lighting.

Switching on and off

  Action
Switching on: - When the ignition is switched on, turn the light switch to the position and tap the turn signal and main beam lever to the main beam position   . When the main beam control or the automatic main beam control is activated, the indicator lamp in the instrument cluster display lights up.
Switching off: - Switch ignition off.
OR: turn the light switch to any position other than   .
OR: tap the turn signal and main beam lever to the headlight flasher or main beam position   .

It may not be possible to switch off the main beam quickly enough or at all using the main beam control function due to the following:

  • When encountering other road users with insufficient lighting, such as pedestrians, cyclists.
  • In tight bends, brows of hills or depressions in the land or half-hidden oncoming traffic.
  • With oncoming traffic on streets with a central barrier where the driver can see clearly over the central barrier e.g. lorry drivers.
  • If the camera is broken or the power supply is interrupted.
  • In fog, snow or heavy rain.
  • In dust or sand that has been whirled up.
  • Stone damage in the camera's field of view.
  • If the viewing field of the camera is misted up, dirty, covered by a sticker, snow or ice.

WARNING

Do not let the extra convenience afforded by main beam control or automatic main beam control tempt you into taking any risks when driving. The system cannot replace the full concentration of the driver.
  • Always check the lights yourself and adjust them to the prevailing conditions for lights, vision and road traffic.
  • The main beam control or automatic main beam control may not be able to recognise all driving situations correctly and may not work properly in certain situations.
  • Damage to the windscreen or changes to the vehicle's lighting system, e.g. additional spotlights mounted, may affect the function of the main beam control or automatic main beam control.

The headlight flasher and the main beam can be switched on and off manually at any time with the turn signal and main beam lever   .
